Streaming Report Shows Big Viewership Increases For Twitch, Facebook

A report from livestreaming tool company StreamElements and stream analytics firm Arsenal.gg shows that even as cities started to open following lockdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemic, viewership was far above last year for the same time period. In July 2020, both Twitch and Facebook Gaming saw significant increases over July 2019.

Twitch went from 851 million hours to 1.4 billion year-over-year, a 67% increase. Facebook had a much smaller increase in raw numbers, but greater growth, going from 109 million to 345 million. As the report notes, this was all amid Mixer shutting down, which led to high-profile streamers who had cut deals with Microsoft either moving back to Twitch or migrating to Facebook.

Meanwhile, in month-over-month figures from June to July, some of the top games slightly decreased in viewership. Those include League of Legends, Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, among others. A handful of games actually got an increase in viewership, though: Valorant, Minecraft, and World of Warcraft. Minecraft saw the single biggest increase, at a whopping 37% change compared to the others only increasing by single-digits.

“While the amount of time spent watching livestreams has fluctuated in the last couple of months as cities begin to open up and people are leaving their homes, the industry is still hundreds of millions of hours beyond Q1,” said CEO Doron Nir, in the announcement. “This is no small feat and speaks to the power and momentum of the medium in terms of attracting both streamers and viewers.”

CoD: Modern Warfare, Warzone Patch Notes Revealed For August 20

Infinity Ward has rolled out a new update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The patch notes are detailed below.

The update makes a number of changes to weapons, most notably by addressing the damage falloff of the FR 5.56 underbarrel shotgun. Previously, the underbarrel shotgun of the FR 5.56–better known as the FAMAS–was extremely overpowered. Infinity Ward said this patch is in response to that issue.

Other adjustments include reducing the Bruen MK9 LMG’s damage to the upper torso, increasing the ISO SMG’s base ADS movement speed, reducing the 735 Sawed-Off Barrel shotgun’s lethal damage at close range, and more. The patch also addresses an exploit near Warzone’s prison and removes the VO from the High Alert perk.

In other Call of Duty news, this year’s entry–officially titled Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War–has been formally announced. Studios Raven Software and Treyarch are attached as developers. A full worldwide reveal of the game will debut on August 26 within Warzone’s Verdansk.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Teaser Art Revealed

Activision finally confirmed Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War with a teaser video, teeing up an announcement next week. But the company isn’t going into full radio silence until then, as Treyarch has now released a piece of key art.

The artwork shows gruff-looking soldiers on both sides of the conflict, American and Soviet, overlayed with various pieces of printed propaganda. This is similar in tone to the teaser video, which featured real-life KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov talking about active measures to destabilize governments.

Aside from the art, the tweet from Treyarch simply reiterates the reveal date of August 26 that was already announced. That announcement promised that the reveal will take place in Verdansk, the fictional city that serves as the map for Call of Duty: Warzone.

That video reveal was from Pawn Takes Pawn, the apparent culmination of a lengthy ARG that laid out puzzles and riddles for fans to uncover. That promotional event included dropping mystery boxes and even fans discovering a nuke. Some fans have speculated that the nuke could be used to reshape the Verdansk map to make it reflect the new Black Ops multiplayer, since Activision has spoken before about the free-to-play battle royale continuing across several annual Call of Duty releases.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Confirmed, Reveal Coming In Warzone

Activision has finally confirmed the name and setting of 2020’s new Call of Duty game, confirming rumors that it will be called Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The teaser video, which uses the same “Know Your History” language as previous in-game teasers, promises a worldwide reveal on August 26 within Verdansk–the setting of Call of Duty: Warzone.

The majority of the trailer focuses on real-life KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov, who delivered a famous warning about tactics that are used to undermine governments. Most of the video is his actual recorded statement, set against various historical and Cold War footage. The video comes from Pawn Takes Pawn, a site fans uncovered by participating in the promotional ARG.

The end of the video flashes a title card (again listing Treyarch and Raven as its developers) and teases the full reveal to come next week. Rumors have suggested that Activision would use Warzone to make its next Call of Duty announcement, which was seemingly supported by recent comments from company president Rob Kostich. Kostich said Warzone caused the company to “rethink how, when, and even where we reveal our upcoming title.”

Black Ops Cold War wasn’t exactly a well-kept secret, though. The name leaked months ago in June, and Activision has been slowly dropping teasers since then. Most recently Activision has been dropping mystery boxes as part of an ARG surrounding the game. Warzone players have also found a nuke, causing some to speculate that it could level some or all of the familiar map in favor of a new one that reflects the Cold War campaign. In any event, it was believed that Warzone would be used to reveal the next game in the series, and that will indeed be the case. Warzone itself will continue to operate, and while we don’t know how Black Ops Cold War will connect to it yet, we do know the battle royale game will eventually feature content from new CoD games.

Although the name of the game doesn’t come as a surprise, its official announcement has led to some jokes about the game’s title, which tacks an additional subtitle onto a sub-series that already has one. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Officially Announced

The next Call of Duty game is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. It was officially announced via a new teaser video, which uses the same “Know Your History” language as previous in-game teasers. The video promises a worldwide reveal on August 26 within Verdansk–the setting of Call of Duty: Warzone. This official reveal confirms rumors of the Cold War setting based on previous leaks. (Update: Black Ops Cold War teaser art has also been revealed.)

The majority of the trailer focuses on real-life KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov, who delivered a famous warning about tactics that are used to undermine governments–tactics (or “active measures”) that include demoralization, destabilization, crisis, and normalization. Most of the video is Bezmenov’s actual recorded statement. While he explains the mechanics of each step, real historical footage plays in the background. Images from the Vietnam War and anti-war protests punctuate “demoralization,” while later stages like “crisis” and “normalization” depict what appears to be footage of more civil unrest, police brutality, the New York Stock Exchange, politicians, and various military technology.

“The time bomb is ticking,” Bezmenov warns. “With every second, the disaster is coming closer and closer. The danger is real.”

The video comes from Pawn Takes Pawn, a site fans uncovered by participating in the promotional ARG. The site itself updated several times before the official unveiling, containing videos and clues that allowed fans to uncover even more details in Call of Duty: Warzone. John F. Kennedy was also featured in the footage, and it was heavily implied the protagonist of the original Black Ops was responsible for his assassination. It’s unclear if that game takes place in the same universe as this one.

The end of the video flashes a title card (again listing Treyarch and Raven as its developers) and teases the full reveal of the new Call of Duty to come next week. Rumors have suggested that Activision would use Warzone to make its next Call of Duty announcement, which was seemingly supported by recent comments from company president Rob Kostich. Kostich said Warzone caused the company to “rethink how, when, and even where we reveal our upcoming title.”

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, Warzone Adds New Full-Color Tomogunchi Model

A new kind of Tomogunchi is now available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It’s called Tomogunchi Turbo and it features a bigger, full-color screen and unlockable charms.

Tomogunchis are wristwatch-like companions that feed off your in-game kills. Similar to a Tamagotchi, a handheld digital pet released in the late ’90s, Tomogunchis are needy little pets that require constant attention or they die.

The Tomogunchi Turbo takes the virtual pet to the next level with a bigger screen on the watch face, vivid colors to display your little companion’s various moods, “better buttons,” and more. Much like the previous Tomogunchi, Turbo requires kills to help the pet grow and destruction to help it evolve. The official Call of Duty Twitter account shared a video showing off the Tomogunchi Turbo, which you can check out below.

There are also charms you can unlock for your Tomogunchi Turbo. Once your virtual pet evolves, you unlock the charm of whatever creature is on the watch face. This includes a bear, fox, mantis, and more. Curiously, the pets–and the evolutions themselves–don’t seem to transform in any sort of linear fashion. This means your skunk could become an octopus or an evolution equally as bizarre.

T-Rex on my wrist, Rampage in the Team Deathmatch I’m in.

In other Call of Duty news, a new update for Modern Warefare and Warzone is available now and it’s massive on Xbox One, weighing in at about 66 GB. The update itself is a texture fix addressing graphical issues with weapons.
