Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Patch Notes For Season 2 Update

Season 2 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is officially underway. The game’s Season 2 update is now live on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it’s a hefty one, weighing in between 50-100 GB depending on your platform. The update adds a load of new content to the hit shooter and makes a variety of bug fixes and balance adjustments. Read on for the full patch notes.

Among the new content now live in the game is a new playable Operator, Simon “Ghost” Riley. There are also two new weapons: the Grau 5.56 and Striker 45. The weapons can be unlocked for free by all players, but Ghost and a variety of other new cosmetic items and XP tokens are locked behind the premium Season 2 Battle Pass.

On top of that, two more multiplayer maps have been added to the game: the classic Rust from Modern Warfare 2 and the brand-new Atlas Superstore. These are likewise available to all players for free. A new map for Ground War (Zhokov Boneyard) and Gunfight (Bazaar) have been added to the game as well.

Beyond the new additions, Infinity Ward has made a number of gameplay adjustments, including a swathe of perk rebalancing. Individual perks have been tweaked, and which slot Overkill and Killchain are in have been moved. The developer has also added an Akimbo Weapon perk, which means you can dual-wield certain guns. You can see the full patch notes for the Season 2 update, taken from Infinity Ward’s website, below.

More content is on the way to Modern Warfare later on in Season 2, including additional maps, gameplay modes, Operators, and possibly a battle royale mode. You can check out the Modern Warfare Season 2 roadmap here.

Call Of Duty: Battle Royale Mode Seemingly Teased In Modern Warfare Season 2

Neither Activision nor Infinity Ward has said anything about a battle royale mode coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but the new cinematic intro for the first-person shooter seems to imply that the popular mode is coming to the game in the future. If you haven’t had enough time to download Season 2’s massive update, you can watch it in the video embedded below.

In terms of Modern Warfare’s developing story, not all that much happens. Perhaps the most notable event is the return of Ghost, who sneakily shows up at the end of the cinematic to radio in that he’s going to need some help to get out of the messy situation that he’s found himself in.

All that said, that sure looks like a dangerous perimeter that’s closing in around you, Ghost. And those players certainly seem to be parachuting out of an airplane towards you, Ghost. And it definitely looked like you were approaching a dead body in order to stealthily loot it, Ghost. Kind of makes one think that you may be playing in a battle royale, Ghost.

That’s not the only clue that something big might be coming either. Although it’s not listed in the Season 2 patch notes, Modern Warfare’s title screen has changed. The options to go into Campaign, Multiplayer, Co-Op, and the Store are still there, but now there’s a new fifth option too. Currently, you can’t click on it–the game doesn’t even give the fifth mode a name. All the information is “classified.” You can see the new title screen in the image embedded below.

A battle royale mode would be pretty cool.

A battle royale mode isn’t new for Call of Duty, though this would be the first time it’s been added to a game in the Modern Warfare series. Call of Duty’s first battle royale, Blackout, was included in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, replacing the series’ traditional single-player campaign. Even though Season 2 is live, not all of the content will be available on day one. Maybe we can expect a new battle royale mode to release partway through the season.

We enjoyed Call of Duty’s first attempt at a battle royale, so we’d welcome Modern Warfare’s take on the genre (if one is actually coming). When talking about Blackout in GameSpot’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 review, Kallie Plagge wrote, “The combination of Call of Duty-specific mechanics with PUBG-style health, loot, and shooting systems is executed well, with quality-of-life improvements to UI–notably, you can quick-equip weapon attachments without going into your menu. The twists are balanced, too, and the Specialist equipment, in particular, doesn’t make things feel unfair. Like in multiplayer, you can ignore anything you don’t want to bother with, and survival ultimately comes down to your situational awareness, your skill with various weapons, and a bit of luck with looting and the circle. That makes victory feel earned and, as a result, immensely gratifying–Blackout definitely captures the tense, shaky excitement that makes battle royale such a popular genre.”

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 2 Update Is Huge, And People Are Upset

The Season 2 update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is live, and it’s causing a bit of a stir in the community due to its massive size. The update size varies between PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but it’s rather large regardless of platform.

The update is roughly 94 GB on PC, 51 GB on PS4, and 68 GB on Xbox One. That’s enough to cause some consternation on the Call of Duty subreddit, as it means long download times and possibly even eating a significant chunk of a bandwidth cap. (On the plus side, that leaves you plenty of time to read the patch notes.)

Once you do have the large update downloaded, you can jump into the Season 2 content and new Battle Pass. The update includes two new multiplayer maps (Rust and Atlas Superstore), a new Ground War map (Zhokov Boneyard), and new Gunfight maps. Gunfight Tournaments and Call of Duty League Ruleset playlists are also added, along with two more weapons (GRAU 5.56 and Striker 45) and the new operator, Simon “Ghost” Riley.

The maps and weapons are free for all players, but Ghost and a series of cosmetic rewards and XP tokens are only for premium Battle Pass tiers. You can also purchase your way into the Battle Pass Bundle and get 20 Tier skips as well.

CoD: Modern Warfare Season 2 – Here's What Launches On Tuesday

Season Two of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare begins tomorrow, February 11. The season offers a brand-new battle pass of rewards to earn, modes to play, challenges to complete, and missions to take on. You won’t get everything on launch day though. In the following article, we list all of the new content that will be available in Modern Warfare on day one of Season Two.

The new season launches with two new multiplayer maps (Rust and Atlas Superstore), a new Ground War map (Zhokov Boneyard), and several new Gunfight maps. You’ll also gain access to two new multiplayer modes–Gunfight Tournaments and Call of Duty League Ruleset Playlist–as well as the Ghost operator. Both the GRAU 5.56 and Striker 45 will be added as new weapons too.

That’s all the new content specifically coming tomorrow. The remaining map, two operators, four modes, and weapon will be added to Modern Warfare later in Season Two. You can see a visual representation of the split in the image embedded below.

The return of Rust is the big content drop for Season Two. For those who don’t know, Rust is another remake of a classic Modern Warfare map. Specifically belonging to 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Rust is modeled off of the Endgame mission from the game’s campaign. It’s a small map, but Rust offers a lot of vertical movement–allowing you to ambush enemies from both above and below.

Most of Season Two’s content will drop on day one, but you’ll need to wait until later in the season to see the rest of the new modes, maps, operators, and weapons.

In GameSpot’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare review, Kallie Plagge wrote, “The pitfalls of Spec Ops don’t detract from what Modern Warfare does well, though. Realism mode is an excellent addition to the slate, and although not all the new multiplayer modes are great, Gunfight and the Night Vision playlist are refreshing standouts. And while the campaign ends up playing it safe in the end, it’s still a memorable one, and it lays a strong foundation for where the Modern Warfare series could go from here.”

Though it’s incredibly obvious–given the annual nature of the franchise–Activision Blizzard has confirmed that a new Call of Duty game is in development and scheduled to release later this year.
